(a)political landscape

Accords transitifs, Daphné Boussion, 2016

(a)political landscape is an exhibition curated in Art Center of Gracanica, in Bosnia y Herzégovina, July 2021 with the support of Mirela Kulovic, the cities Rezé and Saint-Nazaire (FR).

This exhibition offers a time of pause, allowing us to scan the different forms of landscapes that surround us. Because we inhabit the landscape, but it also inhabits us, it structures us, crosses us. In us, cities, expanses, industrial zones, peri-urban, hills, marshes, forests or plateaus are deployed.

The definition of the word landscape: «Extent of a territory that the eye can embrace», reveals the landscape to us as a human construction : to name it is to define it, to invent it.

We might think, through the history of art, that the landscape is naturally dedicated to contemplation, an apolitical genre, dedicated to reverie, bucolism and romanticism. However, the landscape has also since the dawn of time been a source of interests and political conflicts: bearer of resources and identities, men are constantly transforming it or at least acting on it to exploit its resources, or mark its territory. In this exhibition, we will therefore think of the landscape as a complex object with two facets: both contemplative and political.

The goal of this exhibition is to offer new points of view and cross the ways of thinking, that’s why I invated nine artists to participate from Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina and France.

The idea is also to involve citizen from the city of Gracanica which is far away from the cultural offers. Free cyanotype workshops took place in the middle of the gallery space during the exhibition time.
